GUIDELINES: ANALYTIC ESSAYS
An Analytic essay paper is required of all students. These papers should be about five pages (see technical guidelines below). Conventionally, an essay states a reasoned, supported opinion. An analytic essay is an exploration of a work or works in terms of what the author/artist/ commentator has illuminated as regards literary or artistic features, historical period, social context, artistic or societal implications, etc. In such an essay you indicate your assessment of the issue you choose to explore and then explain the reasoning behind your assessment. Analytic essays are about sharing insights and the ways those insights apply to the understanding of an issue or situation. A successful analytic essay explains the reasoning that is fundamental to the insight(s) and the way that the insight(s) illuminate the subject. The aim of an analytic essay is first to inform (90%) and only secondarily to persuade (10%). To succeed, the writer needs to show that his/her reasoning is credible and to do so in as clear and concise a fashion as possible.
The essay is a very standard and key form for structuring ideas in a clear communicable form. It has conventions in terms of the structure that are articulated in all freshman composition courses. If you don't know the formal conventions of the essay, you need to learn at once. See me ASAP.

Evaluation of the Analytic Essay will be on the basis of:
(1) The clarity and energy of the expression of the intent of the essay (thesis).
(2) The effectiveness of the paper in making a convincing case (support).
(3) The logic or reasonableness of your argument (critical thinking).
(4) The technical clarity of your writing (presentation, structure sentence, paragraph, continuity)
(5) Citations as appropriate (Use the style manual of your choice but be consistent). If you use a citation generator, your best bet is to use the one available at the UNM Library web site. (Note: There are other citation generators available on the web. They are not as reliable as Zotero but may be easier to use. If you use them, check the results carefully).

* A note: as to length. My estimate is that most papers will run to five pages to achieve
- The enumeration of a subject (thesis statement)
- The clarification and exploration of that subject in several paragraphs
- Concluding paragraph(s) that place the subject in context and articulate it's relevance or importance
Technical guidelines (key to a professional presentation)
- 1inch margins - top, bottom, both sides;
- A conventional font (12 point) - Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman, Tahoma, or Verdana, for example. Courier is also OK. It is a "throwback" font that looks like typewriting.
- Citations can be parenthetical or numbered as footnotes or endnotes - use the style manual you are most accustomed to but be consistent
- The bibliography or works cited page should conform to the guidelines of the style manual you choose.
- Submit as an attachment in MS Word or PDF format. Save and attach like this (Your Name-HNRS1120-analyticreoport. - ie janetplanet-HNRS1120-analyticreport.doc or .docx or.pdf)
- Use "left only" justification.
- Avoid "widows and orphans" by adjusting top and bottom margins as needed.
- For quotations that extend to more than four lines of verse or prose, place quotations in a free-standing block of text and omit quotation marks. Start the quotation on a new line, with the entire quote indented one inch from the left margin; maintain double-spacing.
- All of this basically exists to make the tasks of professional editors less tedious.
